The site brings together various war-related projects carried out by Egham Museum from 2014 in order to commemorate the centenary of the First World War, and to mark the 80th year since the start of the Second World War in 2019.
Women, Wives, Workers, War 2018
To commemorate the end of 100th anniversary of the First World War, and to mark the contribution women made to the war effort, we have been awarded a ‘Then & Now’ grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to mount an exhibition investigating women’s roles, update our HistoryPin with local women’s stories, and run a series of engagement activities.
Our Streets at War 2014
Egham Museum’s ‘Our Street at War’ project funded by Heathrow Community Fund, conveys the personal stories and local sacrifices of the war by mapping its impact street by street. Using HistoryPin, an award winning history mapping website, we have plotted the impact of the war directly on the map of our local communities, allowing visitors to the site to see how the war effected individual streets.
In 2018, also centenary year of some women receiving the vote, we plan to extend our HistoryPin offer by plotting the locations of women from our community who played a part in the war effort.
Memories of War 2014
Our Memories of War project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, saw teams of students from Royal Holloway interviewing local residents with memories of the Second World War and more recent conflicts, dramatising Boer and First World War letters and then editing the resulting footage to create thematic micro-documentaries for local schools. The interviews and documentaries were showcased various events including a special screening at Vue Cinema in Staines The project, run in partnership with Royal Holloway’s Community Action, also involved student volunteers receiving training and mentorship in conducting oral history interviews, film-making and editing, publicity, curating an exhibition and planning and managing events.
